Overview

We created the website for “DriveFlux,” the first Japanese variable font developed by the Japanese digital font foundry Morisawa Inc.

A variable font is a next-generation font technology that incorporates multiple variations such as weights and widths into a single font file, allowing them to change continuously and smoothly. DriveFlux features a typeface with diverse expressions, equipped with four variable axes: weight, curve design, horizontal stroke weight, and slant angle. On the website, we independently designed and implemented a type tester that allows users to test the font’s expressions while manipulating these four axes. To provide a greater sense of realism during actual use, in addition to features for switching character spacing and background colors, we also put careful thought into the style of the default text within the tester. The fluid transformation of the typeface is expressed through the interactivity and dynamics unique to the web.
